HOSA Middle School Membership
Beginning Fall 2016, Tennessee HOSA began an initiative to increase middle school chapter membership as well as enhance the experience of our middle school members. At the 2015-16 HOSA National Leadership Conference, the Delegate Assembly voted to recognize the Middle School Division as a separate entity beginning with the 2015-2016 membership year.
The approved motion included the following:

Competitive Event Opportunities
The approved motion included the following:
- The Middle School Division shall be composed of students who are in grades 6-8 and are those interested in or planning to pursue a career in the health professions.
- The official definition for middle school members of HOSA for the purposes of Competitive Events is: A middle school student is one who: a) is enrolled in a state-approved health science program or is planning to pursue a career in the health professions; and b) has not been promoted to a secondary institution (grades 9-12) prior to the state’s annual conference.
- Members are eligible for competition at the national level in a middle school strand (noting there must be a minimum of three states in competition prior to a division being eligible for competition at the national level).
- National affiliation fee is $14.

- your name, school, high school your middle school will feed into, a contact at the middle school (if you are a current high school advisor affiliating a middle school chapter), the school's address, and a working email address to reach you.
2. Are you a parent of a middle school student interested in starting a HOSA chapter? Here are some helpful hints:
- Make contact with the high school that your current middle school feeds into so that you may find out who the high school HOSA Advisor(s) are.
- Recruit members and volunteers.
- Ask that the high school chapter help by serving as membership liaisons or mentors to the middle school students.
3. Are you a current high school HOSA Advisor wanting to help start a middle school chapter in your community? Here are some helpful hints for you:
- Recruit parents, teachers, or administrators that you know to help you with affiliating a middle school chapter with a feeder school to your current high school.
- Recruit members are volunteers.
- Assign your high school student members as mentors to the middle school chapter. Assign your high school chapter members to specific duties with the middle school chapter, such as leading meetings or activities.
- Make sure to register your middle school chapter for special events, just like your high school chapter.
